The San Francisco Police Department is reopening a 25-year-old homicide that may be linked to convicted killer Richard Ramirez, known during his 1984-85 spree as the Night Stalker.

Detectives recently obtained a warrant to test Ramirez’s DNA based on new leads in the 1984 death of 9-year-old Mei Leung, who was sexually assaulted and killed in the basement of her home in the city’s Tenderloin district, police said.

“There are no charges at this time,” explained David Shinn, deputy director of the Bureau of Investigation. Inspectors went to San Quentin Prison, where Ramirez is awaiting execution, to get the DNA sample.

Ramirez was convicted in 1985 of 13 murders — 11 in Southern California and two others in the San Francisco area — along with five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. Ramirez, a professed “satanist,” was dubbed the “Night Stalker” for his preference of breaking into houses in the wee hours of the morning.

Italian police are investigating whether Santanists desecrated the site where British student Meredith Kercher was murdered

Detectives were last night investigating the possibility that Devil worshippers broke into the house where British student Meredith Kercher was murdered.

Italian police yesterday discovered that the house – where Meredith, 21, was found semi naked and with her throat slashed in 2007 – had been ransacked by intruders.

Four knives were found on the kitchen floor while a burned candle was also discovered in another room.

Drips of candle wax were found in what had been Meredith’s bedroom.

Devil worship and the occult is a widespread phenomenon in Italy, and such incidents at murder scenes or in woods are not uncommon.

The house in Perugia has been sealed off as a crime scene since the murder in November 2007.

Police officers had guarded the house in the weeks after the death, but they are no longer on duty at the property, which is surrounded by police tapes.

It is not yet known when the break-in occurred, but officers have not visited the property since January.

Police said the intruders had gained entry to the home through a kitchen window at the back of the home and that nothing had been taken.

Meredith’s flatmate Amanda Knox, 21, is currently on trial for her murder along with her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 24, at Perugia court.

Rudy Guede, 21, from the Ivory Coast, was jailed for 30 years last October after being convicted of the murder.

Police and prosecutors believe that she was killed after refusing to take part in a drug-fuelled sex game but both Knox and Sollecito have denied any involvement.

With the murder having occurred around Halloween,  some in Italy have made  lurid claims that there was a Satanic connection to the crime.

Francesco Maresca, the Kercher family lawyer, said he was ’staggered’ by the break-in.

‘I have no words to describe how much distress this will cause the family,’ he said.

‘I hope that full details about what happened will come out quickly.’

Sollecito’s lawyer, Marco Brusco, said: ‘This break-in just shows what we have always said – anyone could get into the house.

‘It proves how easy it is to get into the house and tamper with the crime scene.

‘We are very concerned about what happened but at the same time it proves what we have always said that a thief broke into the house and murdered poor Meredith Kercher.’

Last night a Perugia police spokesman said the break in was discovered after police returned items to the house.

‘Four knives were found at the scene and they were all found to be from inside the house. They were not brought there.,’ he said.

‘A candle was also found but this also appears to have been in the house.

‘Traces of wax were found in Meredith’s bedroom and at this stage we are keeping an open mind on the motive.

‘We cannot exclude anything and it is possible it was for some unnatural reason such as Satanism.’

A city official in the remote Brazilian Amazon village of Envira told CNN that five members of the Kulina tribe are on the run after being accused of murdering, butchering and eating a farmer in a ritual act of cannibalism.

The village’s chief of staff, Maronilton da Silva Clementino, said Kulina tribesmen took the life of Ocelio Alves de Carvalho, 19, last week on the outskirts of Envira, which is in the far western part of Brazil that bumps up against Peru.

Portal Amazonia newspaper reported that the Indians escaped after being held for a few hours in the city’s police station.

No arrest warrants were issued. Brazilian law does not allow the military or civil police to enter Indian lands, Portal Amazonia reported.

It is still unknown how many people took part in the alleged cannibalistic ritual, although several Indians have fled into the jungle fearing prosecution, the newspaper Diario do Amazonas reported.

Clementino said the victim was herding cattle when he met with a group of Indians who invited him back to their village.

“They knew each other and they sometimes helped one another. They invited him to their reservation three days ago and he was never seen again,” Clementino said.

“The family decided to go into the reservation and that’s when they saw his body quartered and his skull hanging on a tree. It was very tragic for the family,” he said.

The leader of a satanist sect in Russia’s Republic of Mordovia that included more than 60 members has been arrested and the group shut down, investigators announced on Wednesday.

According to the Federal Investigative Committee’s reports, the cult leader, whose name has not been released, is a 24-year-old medical student from Belarus. He was arrested on Saturday on charges of organizing an illegal group that infringes on the rights of an individual. He faces a sentence of up to two years if convicted.

Investigators said the members rented a house where they “conducted cult ceremonies, including illegal acts of alcoholic binge drinking, sexual practices and antisocial behavior.”

“During the probe, investigators confiscated a large amount of cult and satanic literature, documents of a religious character in Latin, as well as the organization’s charter and member list,” the report read.

A Wausau man is behind bars in connection to the weekend break-in at St. Michael’s Church, and the tips leading to the arrest of 18-year-old Aaron Kremer came from a unique source.

Chief Jeff Hardel of the Wausau Police says they actually received information leading to Kremer’s arrest from his father.

The church had supposedly had problems with Kremer in the past, so when the incident occured, church officials called his father, who then turned in his son to police.

Staff at St. Michaels noticed the break-in Sunday morning. Apparently the suspect had broken into church offices through a window, ruffled through desks, attempted to get into the safe, and did escape with a small amount of cash.

But the most alarming disturbance at the church may lead to hate crime charges for Kremer.

Chief Hardel says, “He had taken the cross from inside the church, and with that cross he had drawn a pentagram on a wooden desk.”

That symbol is sometimes associated with Satanism by Christians, and because of that, Kremer was arrested for Burglary Theft and Criminal Damage to Property with a Hate Crime enhancer.

Hardel says they’re not sure if he’ll be charged for the hate crime, but they’re discussing it with the District Attorney.

Kremer is currently being held in Marathon County Jail, and is scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday.

Attorneys began selecting a jury Tuesday in a Sioux City double murder trial. Larry Harris is accused of killing his two stepdaughters, 8-year-old Alysha and 10-year-old Kendra Suing, in January 2008. The girls’ bodies were found strangled and stabbed inside their Nebraska Street home. Harris later told police ‘he had been casting a spell that had gone bad’, and it ‘could have had severe consequences’.

Attorneys for both the prosecution and defense questioned potential jurors Tuesday afternoon. Topics in question included Satanism, sanity and any opinions formed from local media coverage of the high-profile case.

They must pick 12 jurors for Harris’ trial. He’s charged with two counts of first degree murder, and he pleads not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors have more than 60 potential witnesses on their list including a state psychiatrist and Wal-Mart employees who worked with Harris. The defense could call 15 witnesses including Harris’ former stepson and Marla Stroman, Harris’ ex-wife and the mother of the two victims.

At least six people have been cut from the potential jury pool so far. Many of those questioned said they had heard about the case in the news, but seeing media coverage alone does not disqualify potential jurors. So attorneys on both sides are trying to determine who can keep an open mind and consider only the information presented during the trial.

Jury selection will resume in Woodbury County District Court Wednesday morning. The entire trial is expected to last two to three weeks.

Prosecutors say Harris was practicing satanism and carefully planned the killings as part of a spell or ritual from “The Satanic Bible.”

Harris allegedly threatened his wife, Marla Stroman, according to Woodbury County prosecutors, saying he could hurt her “in the worst possible way without even touching her.”

Harris told a defense psychiatrist who examined him that he believed that Stroman was having an affair. His attorneys want to keep that information, as well as references to “The Satanic Bible,” out of court.

Prosecutors claim the girls’ injuries are consistent with passages from “The Satanic Bible.” Killing the girls to get back at their mother, they say, is consistent with teachings in “The Satanic Bible” about destroying enemies “by proxy.”

If convicted of first-degree murder, Harris faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

A satanist priest is a satanist priest…different robes perhaps, but the same Master.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable conversions in the history of the Church was that of Bartholomew Longo who went from being a Satanist priest to a beatified, through the extraordinary assistance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Born in 1841 to a practicing Catholic family, he was not an irreligious youth, but when he went to university in Naples to study law all that changed. He first went from being a practicing Catholic to being involved in anti-papal demonstrations and then an atheist, following that a Satanist, eventually being ordained to the Satanist priesthood. He had become a complete apostate.

However, Bartholomew’s family and friends continued to ardently pray for him and his conversion back to the faith of his childhood. A university professor of his hometown in southern Italy began to have discussions with him and with much perseverance managed to persuade him of the irrationality of his position. This was the beginning of his road to sainthood. He then was referred to a Dominican priest named Father Albert who directed his deprogramming and finally guided him back into communion with the Church.

He had recovered his faith, but realizing the awful scandal and damage he had caused, he wished to make reparations. He learnt first-hand of the awful poverty of the tenant farmers near his hometown. It is said that at the sight of their destitution the words of Our Lady of the Rosary came to his mind: “One who propagates my Rosary shall be saved.”

He believed that from this point on he would devote his life to spreading devotion to the Rosary. His first step was to organize Rosary groups around a shrine he established in his neighborhood church around a picture of Mary called Our Lady of the Rosary. The shrine grew and became a basilica in 1901, attracting thousands of pilgrims daily to this day.

The eight suspected Satanists, aged 17 to 19, allegedly lured the four youths to parties on the forested edge of Yaroslavl’s city limits, before inducing them to drink and then chopping up their bodies.

Police found the victims’ arms and legs in a pit dressed with Satanic symbols, and investigators say each victim was stabbed 666 times – a number taken to be the sign of the devil.

The four victims were lured in two separate incidents in late June, investigators believe. First the gang approached and dismembered Olga Pukhova and Anna Gorokhova on June 28, before attacking Varya Kuzmina and her boyfriend Andrei Sorokin the next day. All the victims were between the ages of 16 and 17.

Investigators launched a citywide search before discovering the gruesome death site in mid-August.

The victims – all goths themselves – had told their families they were going to a nearby music festival. Instead, police discovered they had all phoned the flat of alleged Satanist cult leader Nikolai Ogolobyak, who lives 250 metres away from the site of the deadly ritual.

DOZENS of black cats are vanishing across Italy every day to be used in Satanic rituals, an animal welfare group has revealed.

In the last few weeks, black cats – strays as well as pets – have vanished from the streets of Milan, Rome, Florence and Venice.

The Italian Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment (Aidaa) estimates 60,000 were killed last year, to ward off bad luck, but also for use in satanic rites and in cosmetics laboratories where black fur gives the best results.

Lorenzo Croce, Aidaa’s president, said: “It is a phenomenon that is taking place all over Italy and it is growing all the time. In the last few days 120 black cats have vanished in Milan.

“In Venice 63 have gone and in Florence 20 disappeared in a week and a similar number have gone missing in Rome. We have strong suspicions that these cats are being used in Satanic rituals.

“We want to halt this massacre, educate people and restore dignity to black cats.”

The group has set up 200 information points in towns and cities around Italy, where passers-by will be given literature on black cats, asked to sign a petition and urged to adopt one of the 5,000 in cat refuges.

Aidaa has also sent a letter to Pope Benedict XVI, a well-known cat lover.

Mr Croce said: “It would be great if he would speak out in recognition of our initiative and say the prejudice against black cats is a lot of nonsense.”

Black cats, although considered lucky in Britain, are thought of as quite the opposite in Italy where they are associated with witchcraft and Satanism.

Mr Croce said: “We are aware of several cases where the corpses of black cats have been found at sites used by Satanists, they are sacrificed as part of rituals they believe in.”

He added that many Satanists believed that the bones of black cats held magical powers, and that disappearances of the animals were at their highest around Halloween.

A severed foot — the sixth this year — washed up on the shore of a Canadian island on Wednesday, police said.

The right foot was found by a local woman walking on the beach, said Sgt. Mike Tresoor of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the town of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, British Colombia.

Authorities were planning an afternoon news conference to release more details.

The foot was the sixth discovered on shorelines in the area since August, according to local police and media reports. Another foot — a severed left foot still clad in a shoe — was found Monday on the shore of Westham Island, south of Vancouver. Police said it was taken to a coroner for DNA testing.

DEVIL worshippers are being linked to horrific slashings that have left one horse dead and three mutilated.

Police fear the animals have been targeted so their blood can be used in satanic fertility rites.

And they reckon more could follow in the run-up to the summer solstice on June 21 – the longest day of the year and a key date in the occult calendar.

Last night, one horse owner whose mare’s genitals were slashed said: “We are scared stiff. We are watching the animals round the clock.”

The attacks happened at remote farms near Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire.

All of the horses have been slashed on their genitals or hindquarters in the middle of the night.

One woman said: “My 10-year-old mare was slashed and she will never be able to reproduce again.

“I thought the horse had hurt itself on something in the field . But when I called the vet he just took one look and said, ‘Call the police.’

“That was last Monday and then my neighbour has also been hit not once but twice.”

She added: “None of us knew anything about satanism until the attacks but we’ve been told they want blood for the solstice.”

One stables owner has had her animals attacked twice.

She said: “What we’ve been told is the mare’s blood is supposed to be smeared on a naked woman who wants to become pregnant as she lies on an altar and the hair is rubbed on the man.

“I had two animals very badly slashed, a mare and a gelding. I think the gelding might have had part of his tail hacked.

“It is touch and go as to whether the mare will survive.” She added: “I don’t want to come across as a nutter. But I’ve owned horses for 30 years and I have never heard anything like this.

“After the first attacks I moved all the horses into a field outside my house.

“But whoever has done this has clearly been so determined to get at them they have attacked right beside my home. It’s terrifying to think they are so bold.”

Inspector Paul Fleming of Central Scotland Police said: “To get that close to a horse, a great deal of time has to be spent befriending it.

“The person who has done this is obviously comfortable around horses.

“As a result of our inquiries we have discovered that a fourth horse was destroyed by its owners after receiving similar injuries which was not reported to us at the time.”

Last spring, there were more than 25 attacks on horses near Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire. They had their hair cut and were not hurt.
